Brief History

Federal University Teaching Hospital, Wukari

What we know today as Federal University Teaching Hospital Wukari was initially General Hospital Wukari, located at Hospital Ward, Wukari Local Government, Taraba State. It was established on 6/4/1962 and operated on a 24-hour basis. The hospital was licensed by the Nigeria Ministry of Health with facility code 34/14/1/2/1/0001 and registered as a Secondary Health Care Centre.

The approval for the establishment of the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Wukari (FUTHW) was granted on 30/08/2022 by former President Muhammadu Buhari. Following the approval, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Taraba State Government and the Federal Government was executed on 30th March 2023 to upgrade the General Hospital Wukari to a Teaching Hospital.

As part of the transition, 250 staff were inherited from the General Hospital, Wukari. Three principal management staff were appointed in acting capacity: the Acting Chief Medical Director (Prof. Egah, Zanyu Daniel), Acting Director of Administration (Dr. Benjamin, Elisha) and Acting Director of Finance and Accounts (Mr. David, Bulus Agyo), effective from 3rd July 2023.

The hospital was officially handed over to the management team of FUTHW on 1st October 2023. The inherited workforce included 4 Medical Doctors, 5 Pharmacists, 1 Senior Optometrist, 90 Nurses, 10 Laboratory Scientists and 140 other non-clinical staff. On 15/11/2024, Prof. Ayuba Dauda Madachi assumed office as the Chief Medical Director.
